I’m RP – a PhD candidate in the University Program in Genetics and Genomics (UPGG) at Duke University, working in the Ochoa Lab. I study human evolutionary and population genetics, using computational and quantitative tools to understand how demographic history – selection, admixture, adaptation – has shaped human populations.
Outside of the lab, I’m working on becoming a better science communicator. I’ve worked with the Alda Center for Communicating Science, helped organize ComSciCon-Triangle, and taught an introduction to R to high schoolers at NCSSM. I like the idea that the earlier steps of science – observing, hypothesizing, designing an experiment – can be just as compelling a story as the final result.
